Rhododendron Landscape Photography Tour
June 12th to 14th 2009

Come join me for a Rhododendron experience in the heights of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Roan Mountain , June 12th to 14th, 2009. We will follow the bloom wherever it leads, from the Grandfather / Blowing Rock area to the balds of Roan Mountain, the heights of Mount Mitchell and Craggy Gardens.
No one can predict where the bloom will be best until it happens, but I will be scouting the day before so that we can optimize our time spent in the field. We will follow the bloom, rather than commit to one location and get frustrated because of disappointing conditions. This will require some flexibility in travel plans and lodging. We will plan to base in the Banner Elk / Blowing Rock area to give us some options in choosing our sessions. Because the sun comes up very early and sets late, we may not find open restaurants, and need to be prepared to have a cold breakfast and picnic type dinner. A mid-day hot meal is a likely option, en-route from one location to another.
This will be an intensive photographic experience, shoot til you drop, and will involve some hiking. Hikes will be short, probably less than 2 miles round trip, often less, and not overly strenuous. Be prepared to work in adverse conditions, as spectacular opportunities occur here during bad weather. Bring rain gear for yourself, and your gear. A walkie-talkie will be helpful for caravanning as well as on-the-ground coordination; cell coverage may be spotty.
We will be seeking images having power, depth, and staying power for your portfolio and wall. If you would like to kick it up a notch this is the trip for you. We will not simply "shoot" – we will craft fine photographs. Photographers using all formats are welcome, whether film or digital.
My latest book Best of the Blue Ridge Parkway contains considerable detail about our target areas. You can order the book as well as sign up for the tour by following this link. Register NOW
